Farwell to this blog and Hello new website!

Well Storytellers ... the time has come to retire this blog.

The Newport Fiddle and Folk Club, under whose broad wings we shelter, has a fabulous new website where you can catch all our news.

Storytellers, we now have a page of our own!

  • you can sign up to our mailing list
  • check out videos of past events
  • listen to our podcast.
  • scroll through our public Facebook page for storytelling newsy tit-bits.

Visit Newport Storytellers HERE.

When you sign up (if you haven't already) you can expect an email reminder once a month and a link, if we are zooming. Rarely do we email more than this.

We thank Alan Davies from the NFFC for making us so accessible on the new website.

And we thank Adrian Newington, who continues to  develop and refine our storytelling Live and Zoom hybrid gatherings.

Pop over to our new home and be amazed.

Our next Live and Zoom is Friday 20 May at 7.30. Visit the website for the details.

Best wishes to you all

Stay safe and stay connected

We're back!

Finally after so long, the Newport Storytellers are getting back to planning events face to face but ... with a twist.

During the Covid restrictions and our shift to Zoom, we've made friends with storytellers across Australia and overseas. So as to keep these valued relationships alive, in the February session, we experimented with a hybrid Zoom/live gathering.

In our local Newport Community Hub, we lowered the smart screen, hooked up a lap top and two mobile phones and BINGO! It worked.

For 2022, with the exception of April, we have gatherings penciled in the calendar every 3rd Friday of the month to November. The April date falls on Good Friday.

Thanks to Adrian Newington for getting us up and running and to the Hub for making it so easy for us to access the building and practice.

Our next gathering is MARCH 18 - we're still to decide if we'll go hybrid again. We'll let everyone know the plan soon.

World Storytelling Day

MARCH 18 coincides with World Storytelling Day (March 20). The THEME is LOST and FOUND. So if you're planning on joining us, you might like to match up your story to the WSD theme... but no pressure.

Please enjoy our photos from the hybrid evening: Adrian, Alan, David, Dharma and Jackie.

OTHER NEWS

You will know by now  that the Newport Folk Festival was cancelled and so of course was our Podcast Live recording session.

We have rescheduled for August but decided to take the conservative option and not include an audience.

Our plan is to spend an afternoon recording stories and songs to create four more episodes for our podcast with a  cast of new voices.

Covid may yet intervene with our plans but we are feeling optimistic.

And this month's photo is  a pic of Em Chandler, word wizard and teller of wonder tales.  Em is one of the team we'll be recording in August.

THE PODCAST STORY

During the Big Lockdown in 2020, the Newport Storytellers, with the support of a small grant from Hobsons Bay City Council, set about the task of creating a series of six episodes of gentle listening harvested from the story archives and including original songs.

Led by a team of three: Matt McArthur, Alan Davies and Jackie Kerin, they are now aiming to bring the series up to ten and catch some of the voices missed in the first round.

This time, they are fortunate to have the expertise of sound recordist, Kerry Saxby.

WORLD STORYTELLING DAY AND HARMONY DAY @ ELTHAM LIBRARY

Pic: L-R: Dee Palanisamy, Susan Hall, Alan Davies, Jackie Kerin, Dave Davies. FRONT: Roslyn Quin, Em Chandler

Huge thank you to Susan Hall and Roz Quin for inviting us to the Eltham Library to celebrate these global days with story. Em trained all the way from Ballarat, Alan taxied Jackie and Dave from Newport and Dee travelled cross-country from Bentleigh.

As one of the first live events since the restrictions, the 'bums-on-seats' was disappointing but we all know, it's going to be a long, slow road getting people back into public spaces. The stories were live-streamed over Facebook and over 400 people checked in on our shenanigans.

And it was sooo good just to hang out and tell stories in the real!

IN CLOSING ... reminders

  • We aim to make our gatherings inclusive and welcoming.
  • The HUB is an accessible venue.
  • We ask that when planning to tell stories or sing songs, be mindful that sexist, racist, ablest and homophobic material hurt people.
  • Stories 6 - 10 mins
  • These gatherings  are a great space to develop repertoire, build confidence, experiment and make mistakes.

Cheers to All,

Jackie Kerin coordinator Newport Storytellers.

Newport Storytellers ZOOM Friday 19 February 7.30 pm

We're back! We were hoping for a face to face gathering but things are getting a bit Covid-y again so we're starting the year off with a Zoom. We'll be making plans a month or two at a time - ready to pivot, dodge and duck! This month, we'll begin by talking a little about what we would like to do for World Storytelling Day, the podcast and then we'll knuckle down and share some stories. We recommend trying to keep stories to around the six minute mark so there is room for eveyone. Musicians are welcome, if you have some patter you wish to practice or a song that tells a story we'd love to hear from you.

Newport Storytellers Podcast

  Look what we made!

The Newport Storytellers have created a podcast - an audio patchwork of stories told and music harvested from recordings created by the people of Newport, their friends and members of the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club.

The Newport Storytellers podcast was created from the heart, during the time of Covid 19, by Matt McArthur, Jackie Kerin and Alan Davies using whatever methods worked on the day: phones, Zoom, USB mikes and tin cans and string.

The first episodes are available now, more are on the way. You can listen or download on the club website, and also find details of how to subscribe to the podcast.

This listening adventure was supported by Hobsons Bay City City Council through its Quick Response Grants.

ENJOY!!

It's time for a break but with a promise to return in February 2021

 DONATIONS
Newport Storytellers is a Newport Fiddle and Folk Club event. All the on-line sessions are free, so the club has lost an income stream. If you can donate, there is now a button on the front page of the website. It will take you to a PayMate payment form, the amount box blank, so people can fill in their own amount.

Stay safe, well and connected,

Jackie Kerin
Newport Storytellers coordinator
