Coming up in March

Well Storytellers, we are back to business learning, experimenting, crafting stories; building confidence and repertoire.

Our February gathering was well attended, and it was wonderful to welcome new faces.

As well as practicing and trying out stories we had the chance to listen to a dramatised podcast being developed by Cam.  Cam has formed a production company with Andrew,  his creative colleague. You can follow their progress HERE.

We have a few poddies in our story family and we're learning from them and hoping, if the stars align, to make a series of our own.

Our other storyteller/podcaster is Matt McArthur. Matt has a particular interest in the human activity in Antarctica and his excellent work has been recognised with multiple awards HERE

We are back in the Newport HUB on March 20. Please join us.

World Storytelling Day

WSD is celebrated globally and there are many ways you can participate

Our friends in Singapore and the Federation of Asian Story Tellers  are setting up an Online Story Swap. They invite you to ...

'Join us and tell or listen to stories of seafaring folk, of brave, or foolhardy voyages to far-off lands. Or perhaps travel through your imagination to see what voyage this theme inspires.

Friday 20 March 2020, 7.30pm Singapore Time

This STORY SWAP is FREE and is open to anyone! You don't need to be a member of FEAST.

You can offer to tell a story, or simply sit back and enjoy your fellow storytellers as we swap stories.

We're looking for tellers to share a story on the theme of Voyages. (Maximum of 9 minutes)

When you register for the session, you will be sent a link so that you can join in. The link will ask you to download the ZOOM software which is very easy to install and use.

If you would like to tell a story or have any questions about the software, please contact the Swap Host - Roger Jenkins at rogerstoryteller@gmail.com

If you are chosen to tell a story, please make sure you can tell it in 9 MINUTES or less! We want to give as many tellers as possible a chance to share a story.

Storytelling is back in 2020.

Welcome to the first post on the new Newport Storytellers Blog
Our banner image was gifted to us by digital artist and friend of the storytellers Rex Smeal.

Newport Storytellers is an open-hearted space for people who want to learn to craft true tales, traditional stories, tall tales, yarns and stories for children; heart to heart and without notes. We welcome beginners and experienced folks. So come and strut your stuff, share what you know, try out a new story or tell a tale for the first time. Musicians wanting assistance and practice with their patter, are especially welcome.

What we do

  • We are a learning and practice space. However, throughout the year we will plan or participate in events where we can shine.
  • If we have a crowd, we set up a list for 10 storytellers and we ask that stories be no longer than 10 minutes, give or take.
  • We ask that stories be said not read (unless the reading is towards a spoken piece). We reserve 2 - 15 minute places for people who want to try out longer stories.
  • We time each other, give feedback if asked, can sometimes film, record and photograph if requested.
  • We sometimes practice under lights.
  • Throughout the year we welcome storytelling guests from overseas.
  • We drink tea and eat cake and we celebrate each others creative adventures in the spoken word space.

History

Storytelling has been running since April 2017 as a Storytelling Australia Victoria event, under the banner: Fabled Nights. The storytellers have shared tales at the the Williamstown Literary Festival, The Dock and Altona Libraries (as part of World Storytelling Day) and at the Newport Folk Festival. Individually they have appeared at public events in the community and beyond - including Seniors Week and the Port Fairy Folk Festival. We are now nestled under the wings of the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club.

Etiquette

Let kind hearts and common sense prevail: sexist, racist and homophobic stories hurt people so please don't bring them to Newport Storytellers. Be mindful of the cultural property of others, in particular First Nations'. If in doubt, ask.
